A PRAYER FOR THE DYING

Jacob, a Danish immigrant still haunted by his experiences in the Civil War, has built a new life in the town of Friendship. Serving as both priest and sheriff, he is called to retrieve a body found just beyond the town limits and escorts a disoriented woman, discovered wandering in a nearby field, back to the local doctor. After examining the corpse, the doctor warns Jacob that the man may have been carrying diphtheria. The woman may also be infected. When her husband arrives to take her home, the doctor attempts to warn him about the risk of contagion, but the man refuses to listen.

Fearing an outbreak, the doctor urges Jacob to keep the diagnosis secret to prevent the townsfolk from panicking and trying to leave town. After Jacob suffers a personal loss, the doctor orders a quarantine just as a devastating bushfire changes course toward the town. Determined to protect the people in his care, Jacob is pushed to his breaking point. Trapped between a deadly epidemic and the approaching inferno, and having lost nearly everything he holds dear, Jacob struggles to preserve both the town and his own sanity.

Based on Stewart O’Nan’s novel of the same name, Dara Van Dusen’s debut feature is nothing short of a gem—one that deserves to be experienced on the big screen. The film's assured direction, outstanding performances, and breathtaking cinematography immerse viewers in an apocalyptic story where the true threat isn't zombies or monsters, but the devastating consequences of human fear, ignorance, and poor decisions.
